Geddes, NY -- St. Camillus Health and Rehabilitation Center in Geddes has just completed a $3.3 million project that will allow the facility to expand its adult day care and outpatient brain injury rehabilitation services.

The project, finished in January, included renovating 6,500 square feet of existing space and building an additional 5,400 square feet of space.

The expansion provides more space for the facility’s adult day health program — the first in New York state — and the outpatient brain injury program.

Aileen Balitz, the president and chief executive officer at St. Camillus, said the project will enable the facility to expand its mission of providing services that allow people to live at home for as long as possible.

“Some people we’ve been able to maintain at home through our day health program for over 10 years,” Balitz said. “We very strongly believe that people want to stay at home.”

She noted that in the 40 years St. Camillus has been in operation, there was no “extra” money to expand the center’s physical plant. Last year, the facility was able to use state matching grant money to expand its building to accommodate more clients.

“Medical care has advanced, so we can still help those people stay at home,” Balitz said.

St. Camillus provides services to those who need inpatient care and when appropriate gets them back into their own homes, she said.

“If we can move them home and support them at home, that’s what our mission is,” she said.

There are 60 people enrolled in the adult day health program, with an average of 28 people attending each day, said Michele Rivoli, director of marketing, communications and public relations. The expansion will allow up to 24 more people to enroll.
