Syracuse, N.Y. -- Three Syracuse area nursing homes have been fined for deficiencies that regulators say harmed patients.

The fines were levied during the last three months of 2009, according to the Long Term Care Community Coalition. The nonprofit group reports nursing home enforcement actions each quarter.

Rosewood Heights nursing home at 614 S. Crouse Ave. in Syracuse was fined $12,000 by the state for deficiencies found during inspections in August and October of 2008. It also was fined $5,500 by the federal government for more problems uncovered last year.

A May 6, 2009 inspection at Rosewood found nurses failed to wash hands, change gloves and take other infection control precautions. It also found staff members were not administering insulin injections correctly.
